Charleston Boat and Motor Winterizing!

Nov. 12 2025 Service By Hanckel Marine

When temperatures in Charleston drop below freezing, you still need to take precautions to protect your boat's engine and systems from damage caused by expanding water.

- Lower outboard all the way down to drain any water in the power head and lines, even if you keep the boat in the water

- Remove drain plugs to ensure all the excess water drains out of the hull of the boat

- Drain freshwater tanks and lines. Add a marine antifreeze (follow the instructions for that product) to these systems to protect the pumps and plumbing lines

- Keep fuel tanks full with non ethanol fuel and treat with a fuel stabilizer. Fill the fuel tanks to 90% capacity to minimize condensation and then add a marine specific fuel stabilizer. Run the engine for a few minutes to ensure the treated fuel circulates throughout the system.

- Make sure all batteries are fully charged
