Boat Organization and Storage Tips

Nov. 11 2019 News By Hanckel Marine

When you’re cruising freely over the waves, you don’t need a ton of stuff weighing you down. Even in the largest craft, space is limited and clutter is distracting and can potentially be dangerous. To best maximize the space you have in your boat, we’ve compiled some best practices for boat organization and storage:

Creative Compartments

Whether it’s makeshift concoctions or custom-made bags or boxes, think creatively about storage solutions for things like rope, shoes, fishing rods (if not equipped with rod holders and storage) or tools. There are many options that you can find in boat shops (visit our shop at Hanckel Marine!) or you can get crafty and make your own. We’ve seen some pretty nifty solutions when people put on their thinking caps. Standbys include Ziploc bags or dry bags; they’re good for keeping any documentation, like fishing licenses or boat registration, safe and dry.

Safety First

Safety gear should be organized and kept together. Gear can be stored in a dry box in the console or a storage locker that is quick to get to in case of emergency. Don’t forget to check the dates of any safety equipment. Life jackets should be in easily accessible compartments or even in a storage net in the t-top of your boat (if so equipped).

Bungee Bound

Bungee cords are endlessly useful. They can be used to mount down just about anything, including flip flops, fishing rods and tools. To store the cords when not in use, simply put them in a canvas or plastic container.

The key to effective boat organization and storage is to take inventory of everything you have, eliminate what you don’t absolutely need and then get creative about how best to store what you have in the space you’re allotted.
